The crystallization of urea melt during granulation generates urea dust and releases part of the ammonia present in the melt. Both components enter the process air and must be removed before it is discharged into the atmosphere.
Conventional scrubbing technologies can collect larger particles relatively easily but are less effective at capturing fine and submicron dust.
As environmental limits for particulate and ammonia emissions become more stringent, urea producers require more effective scrubbing technologies that can achieve lower emission levels without excessive energy consumption or operational complexity.
NEXTCHEM offers the MicroMist Venturi™ Scrubber for high-efficiency emission control in urea granulation plants. Co-developed by Stamicarbon and EnviroCare International, this design is developed to remove submicron particulate matter and soluble gases with high efficiency and low energy input.
The MicroMist Venturi™ Scrubber, or MMV Scrubber, is developed specifically for urea granulation plants. It removes submicron filterable particulate, condensable particulate and soluble gases at very high efficiencies while requiring low energy input.
Inside the MMV vessel, urea dust is captured across a broad particle-size range, including fine and submicron particles.
The collected urea enters the circulating scrubbing solution, which can be recycled to the urea melt plant. This allows valuable product to be recovered rather than lost through the exhaust system.
Ammonia is removed through acidic scrubbing with sulfuric or nitric acid. The acid reacts with the ammonia present in the exhaust air, reducing its concentration before the treated gas is released.
The MMV Scrubber can reduce urea dust emissions to below 10 mg/Nm³. Where even lower particulate emissions are required, a polishing Wet Electrostatic Precipitator can be integrated downstream of the scrubber.
The combined MMV and WESP configuration can achieve emission levels as low as 5 mg/Nm³, as already demonstrated in two Stamicarbon urea plants.
The MMV Scrubber can be integrated with our fluid-bed urea granulation technology, providing a coordinated approach to granulation and emission control.
For urea prilling towers, NEXTCHEM also offers the Jet Venturi Scrubber through Stamicarbon.
The MMV Scrubber combines high particulate-removal efficiency with a modular and adaptable configuration.
Venturi tubes can be added or removed when required, allowing the system to respond to variations in the volume of gas to be treated.
Its modular design facilitates installation, while high-quality and low-maintenance components support reliable operation.
The system also provides a strong turndown ratio, enabling effective emission control under changing plant operating conditions.
By capturing fine urea dust, reducing ammonia emissions and recycling the urea-containing scrubbing solution, the MMV Scrubber helps producers meet stringent environmental requirements while limiting product losses and maintaining efficient plant operation.
