BIODEGRADABLE AND BIOBASED POLYMERS
Integrated technologies for biodegradable polymer value chains
Biodegradable Polymers for Evolving Market Needs
- Comprehensive package, including technology licensing, process design, catalyst supply and technical assistance
- Bio‑based technology configuration closely matching fossil‑based BDO layouts
- Industrially proven catalysts and conventional unit operations
- Integration with PBS units
Evolving regulations and customer expectations are accelerating demand for biodegradable polymers in selected applications.
These materials are particularly relevant for applications where plastics are difficult to recycle mechanically, including films, packaging, disposable items and selected agricultural uses.
Biodegradability depends on the structure of the molecule, not its origin. For this reason, biodegradable plastics such as polybutylene succinate (PBS) can be produced from either bio-based or fossil-based raw materials, while retaining their biodegradability.
Through the action of living organisms, they can naturally decompose under suitable environmental conditions, helping address the accumulation of plastic waste.
Industrial Applications of Biodegradable Polymer PBS
PBS is the most promising biodegradable polymer on the market, thanks to its versatile properties and high thermal resistance—qualities not yet matched by other biopolymers. PBS can be used in a wide range of sectors, including:
- Packaging
- Agriculture and fisheries
- Heat-resistant applications (coffee capsules, microwave containers, etc.)
- Disposable household items
- Medical applications
- Textiles
- Automotive and electronics
- Blends and composites
Nextchem Technologies for Biodegradable and Biobased Polymers
NEXTCHEM offers process technologies for producing 1,4-Butanediol (BDO) and Dimethyl Succinate (DMS) from maleic anhydride. The two intermediates can be co-produced from a single feedstock in a single plant for applications including biodegradable polymers such as PBS.
Our technologies can use C4-based feedstocks, including butane-derived routes, or support biobased alternatives using bio-derived succinic acid.
Our innovative C4-based solution to produce PBS replaces succinic acid with DMS for a cost-effective plant configuration.
Integration of our NX CONSER™ Duetto with the PBS unit allows optimization in terms of capital and operating expenses by maximizing energy efficiency and recovery.
