Maritime Decarbonization- Rethinking Ocean Industries
CONFERENCE
For humans, water is more than just an element. Like the sea, it has always been driven by innovation, change, and lateral thinking.
At NEXTCHEM, the innovation hub of the MAIRE group – an Italian multinational leader in engineering and developing technological solutions for the energy industry’s evolution – our spirit blends a rigorous engineering approach with a humanistic vision. This vision is fully reflected in the motto “Planet Aqua, Planet Peace.” We recognize how the sea has once again become a key issue on the geopolitical stage, and equally central to the debate between development and sustainability. A space for coexistence, conflict, and debate, but also a living laboratory for innovation.
NEXTCHEM's contribution to Venice Climate Week fits into this ever-changing landscape, offering not just technological expertise but a tangible industrial vision. Those who work on solutions every day know that the sector's transformation doesn't happen in leaps and bounds, but rather through a journey of technological choices, integration, and time. There is no silver bullet, but there is a commitment to integrating the technologies we have at our disposal.
Our work in the maritime sector begins with an open, multi-solution approach: a supply chain that leverages low-carbon methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia, three key energy carriers to move us closer to low-carbon shipping.
Alongside these are mechanical and chemical recycling technologies, which are essential for tackling another emergency that closely affects our seas: the dispersal of plastics.
On each of these fronts, we integrate engineering, chemistry, and sustainability with a clear goal: to turn climate objectives into tangible, scalable industrial solutions based on technologies that are already available.
It's a gradual but real change that allows us to complement —and, over time, surpass— traditional fuels. But the most pressing challenge is the ecosystem: for this path to become a reality, industry, institutions, and regulators must work together in coordinated action to turn innovation into operational reality.
This approach aligns with our core values, expanding our horizons while remaining steadfast in the belief that we can envision and shape a new future for the seas.
